How has the fear of loss, disconnection, and fragmentation kept you from truly living? What step might you take to overcome it?

HUMILITY, ASSERTION, OPINIONS

SOMETIMES ON SOCIAL MEDIA I feel like I am standing in the center of a circle amid a family fight watching those surrounding me gesticulating, preening, scheming, manipulating, shouting, launching verbal grenades, or calmly and honestly sharing what they believe to be the truth. I see others standing on the sidelines because they can’t get a word in edgewise or because they fear being assaulted by those who are more aggressive. Others head for the hills, disavowing social media altogether because they don’t find it worth their time. Why would they willingly subject themselves to assaults on their identity and sanity?

Of course, as a Nine, I can see multiple sides. I can affirm kernels of truth on this side or that even though I don’t think it is the complete truth or the full story. No one person or group has the corner on truth although some are much closer than others. I say this knowing I do not see everything, nor that everything can be seen in this life or even after—otherwise we’d be God.

I do see the value of engaging in social media and also the need to forego it in order to maintain our sanity. I regularly fast from social media whether that be throughout the day, for days on end, or on holy days.

This seeing multiple sides of an issue is so Nine-ish isn’t it? That is why we are at the top or crown of the Enneagram—we can see the great expanse and have a little bit of all the other numbers in us. But the temptation is for us to stand in the middle and see multiple sides while never choosing or offering our own opinions. We fear displeasing people if we arrive at an opinion or a conviction they deem controversial.

But what if we are right, on point? The fact is, no matter how hard we try and no matter how right we are, not everyone is going to like us. Our Enneagram Nine temptation is to shrink back like a wallflower so that we don’t offend. But moving toward health means we will work to know what we think and share our stances more often than we are comfortable.

For Nines, speaking truthfully and confidently—even if our stances on run-of-the-mill and controversial issues offend others—is one of the healthiest things we can do. We don’t have trouble with humility, so let’s remind ourselves again: we have to assert ourselves.
